In search of more space in their listed Victorian home, and keen to introduce a contemporary look, the owners enlisted the help of Gregory Phillips Architects to remodel a dated 1980s rear extension as part of a whole-house renovation.
They wanted to replace it with a two-storey extension to complement and contrast with the main property, housing a modern kitchen-diner.
One of the owners is a computer games designer, so wanted some elements of fun and colour in the design.

The kitchen-diner is at ground level, with a basement below created by excavating into a sloping lawn to make space for a pool. Minimising the visual impact of the new extension, in line with planning restrictions, white exterior render links it to the original house. The new space includes a living area next to the full-width, floor-to-ceiling glazed walls, which maximise the views, with the dining area at the opposite side of the dual-aspect room
