Hywel Jones’ renovation stemmed from his love of the arts. Having lived in the house since 1992, he’d already converted the loft and redecorated several times, but now he decided it was time for a drastic change.
After playing around with ideas, and working with Granit Architects, he chose to extend into the side return and to the back of the house. He dug down into the basement, spanning the depth of the house, creating enough space for a kitchen-diner, utility room and a TV snug.
The owners: Hywel Jones, a solicitor, lives here with his partner Aidan O’Rourke, who works at the Royal National Theatre, and their cat, Bonnie
The property: A five-bedroom Edwardian terraced house in Clapham, London
Total project cost: £1.68 million
A side and rear extension at ground level created a mezzanine living room. This allows natural light from the roof light to flood both the living area and the kitchen-diner below
