Loft en suites: Case studies

Here are some case studies of people who have created a new bathroom in their roof space.

Creating a stylish family bathroom

ABOVE: (Before) The loft space in Christine and Gareth McGrath’s own-build bungalow was waiting to be converted as part of the couple’s long-term plans for the property; (After) The traditional-style roll-top bath and pedestal basin from Heritage Bathrooms complement the modern shower perfectly; all from Timoney Tiles.

The sloping ceiling in Christine and Gareth McGrath’s loft dictated the layout of their family bathroom. Initially, the couple didn’t think a separate shower would fit into the space.

However, once they looked at their plans in detail, they realised that the loft’s proportions were deceptive – they could fit a corner shower into the space, as well as a freestanding roll-top bath.

In order to maximise the space where the ceiling is higher, they chose a corner shower and put a bath under the sloping area. They also added a Velux window to provide plenty of natural light.

The couple’s loft project took a month and cost around £5,000.

Adding a smart family bathroom

ABOVE: (Before) With its considerable headroom, the unused loft space was perfect for converting to a new bathroom; (After) The wall panelling and roll-top bath, both from Homebase, create character in this space, while a thermostatic towel rail, also Homebase, ensures comfort.

As the previous owners of Janice and Nigel Oxby’s property had already installed the plumbing and window in the loft, it was a lot easier converting this space than starting from scratch.

The loft’s false ceiling was removed to create a sloping roof, while a new window frame was installed and repositioned so that it wasn’t directly over the bath. The pipework from the bathroom below was extended to enable the bath, basin and WC to be fitted into the space.

Creating this timeless New England look took around a couple of months and cost £2,000.
