Spring decorating: Pastels
Pastel trends feature in almost all home collections this season. Whether they are soft watercolour brushstroke prints, as in John Lewis’ Bluebellgray cushions, or designs inspired by English country gardens, as in Laura Ashley’s Darling Buds and Matalan’s Vintage Living collections, the look is both fresh and classic.
Pastel shades often create a handcrafted or antique look, and Next’s new Vintage Bazaar range really plays on this theme, with delicate floral embroidery, appliqué and patchwork featuring in its luxurious bedlinen this season.
The pastel trend is also a key feature in two major Crown Paints collections – the Modern Nostalgia range moves away from sugar-sweet colours to bring a touch of coolness, with warm cream and watery blue next to terracotta and charcoal, while the Summer Jewels range includes soft colours with a vibrant silver highlight.

Pastels: Get the lookPastels work well in decorating schemes and accessory collections. The appeal is their subtle, faded look, which makes them seem as though they have always been around – a good example is House of Fraser’s Faded Pastels range, featuring muted plum and teal. Mixing easily together, each pastel colour harmonises with the next one, and that makes this a very easy trend to live with and update from season to season. |
