Cooker hoods: Classic designs

Fingerprint-proof stainless steel makes this model, with a 62dB noise level and two halogen lights, easier to clean. It has three speeds, two aluminium grease filters and push button controls. Measuring (H)67x(W)60x(D)50cm, a wider 90cm model is available.

2. JOHN LEWIS JLBIHD603 £299
This stainless steel chimney hood, (H)74-94x(W)60x(D)52cm, has a glass canopy and is suitable for extraction or recirculation. It has three push button speed settings, a maximum noise rating of 68dB, two 20W halogen lamps and washable metal grease filters. Charcoal filters are also included.

3. BAUMATIC BTI975GL around £455
A stainless steel and glass island hood, (H)116x(W)90x(D)60cm, suitable for extraction or recirculation in a well-ventilated area. It has two halogen lights, a 61dB noise level, two washable aluminium filters and push button controls with three speeds.

4. STOVES 1000DCP around £460
Available in black and stainless steel and measuring (H)70- 116.5x(W)100x(D)50cm, this hood is fitted with illuminated electronic push button controls and a 15-minute delayed stop timer. It has twin halogen lamps, grease filters and three fan speeds with a booster, plus a noise level of 52dB.

5. RANGEMASTER CLASSIC from £503
Suitable for recirculation or external venting, this model is available in cranberry (above), cream and black, (H)73.5-102x(W)90x(D)49cm or 110cm width. It has three speeds, two halogen lamps, a dishwasher-safe grease filter and a 65dB noise level. It is fitted with a chrome decorative rail and has an extendable chimney.

6. BOSCH EXXCEL DWA09E750B from £518
This curved glass and stainless steel canopy hood, (H)64-106x(W)90x (D)54cm, is suitable for extraction and recirculation. It has a low noise rating of 46dB, two halogen spotlights, a dishwasher-safe, multi-layer mesh filter system and three venting speeds, plus an intensive option.

7. GORENJE SIMPLICITY DT9SYB around £600
In aluminium housing with a black front, this model has a 62dB noise level and is suitable for recirculation or extracting air with venting. It has a single knob for easy control and three venting speeds, as well as two halogen lights. It measures (H)66-119x(W)90x(D)45cm.

Expert advice

Hannah Groves, brand manager at Neff, says: ‘Extracting air via ducting removes steam and odours best. The only alternative if this isn’t possible – for example, if you live in a flat – is to recirculate purified stale air back through the hood. A higher extraction or circulation rate means a more efficient hood.’
